BMW M Boss Frank van Meel explained to Auto Express that the M3’s rear doors retain their dimensions from standard models. This deliberate contrast emphasizes the wider track, visually highlighting the additional power and performance packed beneath the skin.

“Being able to see the power,” van Meel describes it—a statement that underscores BMW’s design philosophy. The exaggerated fenders clearly convey aggression and capability, even without a perfectly flowing transition with the doors.

While this approach stands out, it’s not universally adopted across the BMW M lineup. Sleeker coupes feature smooth transitions between door and fender, and SUVs tend to follow suit. It seems this specific quirk is reserved for the sedans where emphasizing that planted rear stance takes precedence.

Take the Audi RS3 or RS6 Avant as examples; their sporty personas are equally compelling despite clean lines. However, BMW’s choice with the M3 arguably adds a unique, rugged character to its already potent image. Whether it’s about highlighting performance or simply making a bold statement, the intentionally jarring door-to-fender line becomes an instantly recognizable hallmark of the Bavarian powerhouse.
