Denza B5: New Plug-In Hybrid SUV Aims for Off-Road Market

The Denza B5, a new plug-in hybrid SUV from Chinese automaker BYD’s premium export brand, is set to launch in late January 2026, targeting the competitive large off-road SUV segment currently dominated by vehicles like the Toyota Prado. Unlike many competitors, the B5 will come exclusively with a plug-in hybrid powertrain, a move that signals a shift toward electrified off-road capability.

Key Specs and Pricing

The Denza B5 will be available in two trims: a base model starting at $74,990 AUD (before on-road costs) and a top-spec Leopard variant priced at $79,990 AUD. The B5 is slightly smaller than the Toyota Prado but offers five seats. Early buyers will receive a free premium paint and interior upgrade, valued at $1818.

Powertrain and Performance

Both B5 variants feature the same plug-in hybrid system paired with a four-wheel-drive setup, including electrically actuated front and rear differential locks. The suspension is double-wishbone front and rear, but the Leopard trim includes BYD’s advanced DiSus-P adjustable hydraulic suspension, allowing drivers to modify ride height and stiffness on demand. The vehicle also includes a V2L (vehicle-to-load) function for powering external devices.

Fuel efficiency figures are provided under both NEDC and WLTC testing cycles, with NEDC data appearing on window stickers.

Features and Equipment

The base B5 comes well-equipped with 18-inch alloy wheels, a full-size spare, automatic LED headlights, a power sunroof, keyless entry, and a comprehensive suite of driver-assist features including adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, and blind-spot monitoring. The interior includes a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a large 15.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The Leopard trim adds DiSus-P suspension, 20-inch wheels, Nappa leather upholstery, ventilated rear seats, and other luxury enhancements.

Warranty and Servicing

Denza will support the B5 with a six-year/150,000 km vehicle warranty and an eight-year/160,000 km battery warranty. A capped-price servicing scheme is planned, though pricing details have not yet been released.

Safety

The Denza B5 has yet to undergo testing by major safety organizations like ANCAP or Euro NCAP, but standard safety features include a full suite of driver-assistance technologies.

Colors and Interior Options

The B5 will be available in Eclipse Black as standard, with optional exterior colors including Alpine White, Juniper Green, Glacier Blue, Granite Grey, and Leopard Gold. Interior options include Slate Grey, Jade Green, and Sandstone.

The Denza B5’s arrival represents a new challenge to established off-road SUVs, especially given its focus on plug-in hybrid technology. The market will be watching to see how the brand’s value proposition — combining off-road capability with electric efficiency — resonates with consumers.
