Peugeot 408 Gets Sharper Design, Enhanced EV Tech at Brussels Motor Show

Peugeot has unveiled a refreshed version of its 408 fastback crossover at the Brussels Motor Show, featuring a bolder exterior design and key upgrades to its electric powertrain. While the styling changes grab attention, the more significant improvements lie in the EV’s efficiency and convenience features.

Striking New Exterior

The updated 408 immediately stands out with a redesigned front end. Peugeot has removed the traditional “teeth” from the grille —replacing it with split lighting units that feature three illuminated “claw” daytime running lights and animated turn signals. The headlights are positioned lower, nearly blending into the gloss black accents to create a cleaner, more aggressive look.

The new grille also integrates an illuminated Peugeot logo with a hidden radar sensor, further streamlining the design. At the rear, the traditional logo has been replaced with illuminated “Peugeot” lettering for the first time in the brand’s history, complemented by new taillights and gloss black detailing. Customers can choose from updated wheel sizes (17- to 20-inch) and a new exclusive color, Flare Green, which dynamically shifts between bright yellow and deep green depending on the lighting.

Subtle Interior Updates

Inside, the changes are less dramatic. The 408 receives updated trim options, upholstery, and a new 10-inch digital instrument cluster with improved graphics. The 10-inch infotainment system remains familiar.

More Useful EV Improvements

The electric E-408 retains its 58.2 kWh battery pack and 210 hp motor, delivering a WLTP range of 283 miles (456 km). However, the real news is the addition of new features designed to maximize usability in real-world conditions.

The model now includes a battery pre-conditioning system, allowing drivers to warm the battery in cold weather with a digital button. The GT trim level takes this further by automatically pre-conditioning the battery when navigating to a charging station.

Other enhancements include Plug & Charge capability, a Vehicle to Load function that provides up to 3.5 kW of power, and an 80% charge limit for at-home AC charging to preserve battery health.

Hybrid Options Still Available

For those not yet ready for a full EV, Peugeot offers plug-in hybrid and traditional hybrid variants. The plug-in hybrid combines a 178 hp petrol engine with a 123 hp electric motor, delivering a combined output of 237 hp and up to 53 miles (85 km) of electric range. The standard hybrid model pairs a 143 hp petrol engine with an electrified six-speed transmission, achieving 5.0 L/100 km (47 mpg US) in WLTP testing.

The 408’s updates demonstrate Peugeot’s focus on blending striking design with practical EV technology. The styling changes make the model more aggressive and modern, while the enhanced features address key concerns for EV drivers—range optimization and convenience.
