Bentley is evaluating a significantly more rugged version of its Bentayga SUV, previewed by the new X Concept. The move reflects a growing trend among luxury brands to cater to off-road enthusiasts, even if it seems counterintuitive.
Enhanced Capability
The X Concept is built on the high-performance Bentayga Speed model, retaining its 641bhp twin-turbo V8 engine. However, key modifications have been made to enhance off-road performance:
- Increased Ride Height: The vehicle sits 55mm higher than the standard Bentayga.
- Wider Stance: Track width is extended by 120mm, making it 40mm wider overall.
- Aggressive Tires: 22-inch, one-piece wheels from Brixton are paired with high-profile all-terrain tires.
- Improved Wading Depth: Maximum wading depth is increased to 550mm (a 50mm improvement).
- Ground Clearance: The concept boasts almost 310mm of ground clearance.
The luxury SUV still retains its air suspension and active anti-roll bars, ensuring a balance between comfort and capability.
Why This Matters
Bentley’s move isn’t random. The luxury SUV market is increasingly competitive, and brands are looking for ways to stand out. The X Concept serves as a testbed to gauge customer interest in a truly off-road Bentayga.
The trend towards rugged luxury vehicles is not new. Porsche’s original Cayenne was a popular choice for off-road conversions, both by owners and Porsche itself. Bentley is now exploring if there’s demand for a factory-built, high-performance off-roader.
Testing and Demonstration
Bentley intends to gather feedback from real-world testing:
- FAT Ice Race: The X Concept will compete in the upcoming FAT Ice Race in Salzburg, Austria.
- Chris Harris at the Wheel: Former Autocar writer and TV presenter Chris Harris will drive, towing Olympic skier Hedvig Wessel.
- Attention-Grabbing Additions: The roof rack is equipped with spotlights and an electric go-kart, further signaling the concept’s unconventional purpose.
The X Concept is more than just a stunt; it’s a calculated move by Bentley to explore a new segment of the luxury SUV market. The company is actively measuring public and professional interest before making a final decision on production.
