MG2: New £20K EV Targets Supermini Market with ‘British’ Styling

The competitive electric supermini class is about to get crowded, as MG prepares to launch the all-new MG2 in 2027. Priced around £20,000, this model aims to undercut rivals like the Renault 5 and Citroen e-C3 by delivering the exceptional value MG is known for, with a distinct British design twist.

The Rising Electric Supermini Segment

The small EV market is rapidly expanding. Major automakers are rushing to offer affordable electric options, with upcoming models from Volkswagen (ID. Polo), Cupra (Raval), and Kia (EV2) adding further pressure. MG’s entry is timed to capture a share of this growing demand.

Design: A ‘British’ Focus

To stand out, MG is prioritizing style. Jozef Kaban, VP of Global Design, revealed that the MG2 will feature a more pronounced British aesthetic. While the UK design team is already involved in all MG projects, this model will see them take a leading role, ensuring a localized appeal. Kaban described the MG2 as “like the cute baby in the family,” and emphasized the ambition to create a memorable design.

Technical Specifications and Platform

The MG2 will be built on MG’s next-generation ‘E3’ architecture, which prioritizes cabin space, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness. This platform already underpins the MG4 Urban, which uses a front-wheel drive layout and torsion-beam rear suspension to maximize affordability. The MG2 is likely to offer similar battery options, potentially including 41.9kWh and 52.8kWh packs, delivering over 280 miles of range.

Interior and Tech

Expect the MG2 to borrow heavily from the MG4 Urban’s interior, including the 12.8-inch touchscreen, seven-inch digital driver’s display, and physical climate controls. This represents a significant upgrade in quality and technology compared to earlier MG models.

Market Positioning and Timing

MG’s UK product chief, David Allison, stated the MG2 will expand the brand’s presence in a crucial segment. The car is expected to be revealed in late 2026, with UK deliveries starting in 2027. This launch comes at a pivotal moment, as electric vehicle adoption accelerates, and consumers demand more affordable options.

The MG2’s success will depend on whether it can deliver on its promise of value, style, and range. With a crowded market ahead, the British-inspired design could be key to differentiation.
