Geely Galaxy M7 PHEV: Long Range for Urban and Highway Driving

Geely’s Galaxy M7 plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) is launching in China in April, marking a new push for extended electric range and combined fuel efficiency in the mid-size SUV segment. The vehicle combines a 225 km (CLTC standard) pure-electric range with a total combined range of 1,730 km, offering both daily electric commuting and long-distance travel without range concerns.

Technical Specifications

The M7 uses a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated engine (82 kW) paired with an electric motor. It features a 29.8 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery that enables the 225 km electric-only capability. When combined with the gasoline engine, the total range reaches 1,730 km. Geely has focused heavily on thermal management, integrating a high-efficiency system and fast-charging capabilities into the “Aegis Golden Brick” battery pack.

The hybrid powertrain also features a 47.26% thermal efficiency engine and the Star Intelligence 2.0 cloud-based energy management system. These innovations aim to cut fuel consumption by 15% and reduce thermal losses by 30%, positioning the M7 as one of the most efficient mid-size PHEVs in China.

Design and Interior Features

The M7’s exterior design borrows cues from Geely’s Galaxy M9, including a full-width LED light bar and a dual-tone body style. The SUV measures 4,770 mm long, 1,905 mm wide, and 1,685 mm tall, with a 2,785 mm wheelbase.

Inside, the M7 features a floating touchscreen, a full LCD instrument panel, and Geely’s Flyme Auto operating system. Additional comfort and convenience features include 256-color AI ambient lighting, a 23-speaker Flyme Sound system, and a 50W wireless charger. The rear seats fold in a 4:6 split for flexible cargo space.

Market Positioning and Competition

The Galaxy M7 is aimed at the 10–15 million yuan (approximately $1.45 million – $2.18 million USD) segment of the Chinese PHEV market. Geely’s primary goal is to appeal to families seeking extended electric driving in urban environments while still providing the long-range capability for highway travel.

The M7’s main competitors include the BYD Song Pro DM-i and Song PLUS DM-i. Geely emphasizes its extended electric range and family-focused cabin features to differentiate the M7 from its rivals.

Industry Context and Outlook

The Galaxy M7 was first previewed in a Chinese regulatory filing in December 2025, confirming its dimensions and core PHEV configuration. Recent testing has shown the M7 achieves a fuel consumption rate of 3.35 L/100 km when running on gasoline alone, ranking it among the most efficient mid-size PHEVs available in China.

The Geely Galaxy M7’s long-range PHEV design indicates a trend towards electric flexibility: blending daily EV commuting with gasoline-backed long-distance capability. This approach seeks to overcome range anxiety while maintaining fuel efficiency.
