Leapmotor is preparing to launch the B03, an all-electric supermini hatchback designed to compete with popular rivals such as the Renault 5 and Volkswagen’s upcoming ID. Polo. Though conceptually similar in size to the Honda Jazz, the B03 prioritizes interior space through its tall body (1.56 meters high) and extended wheelbase (2.605 meters). This combination should offer class-leading legroom for passengers.
Positioning in Leapmotor’s Lineup
The B03 is essentially a streamlined version of the B03X, a supermini-SUV slated for release in 2026. While retaining the same underlying design and structure up to the rear pillars, the B03 distinguishes itself with a lower profile and smaller wheels (16-inch compared to the X’s 18-inch alloys). This suggests a focus on efficiency and affordability without sacrificing practicality.
Performance and Technology
Leapmotor has not yet disclosed the B03’s battery specifications, but the Chinese market currently offers two motor options: 94bhp and 121bhp. Competitors, particularly the Cupra Raval, are expected to offer more powerful alternatives, with outputs ranging up to 222bhp.
The leaked Chinese specifications reveal that the B03 will include advanced driver-assistance systems supported by surround cameras and LiDAR technology. This positions the vehicle as a tech-forward option in the crowded EV market.
Market Strategy and Timeline
Leapmotor International boss Tianshu Xin confirmed that the B03 will be unveiled at the Brussels motor show in January 2025. The company has ruled out offering a range-extender hybrid version of the B03, reserving that powertrain for larger models like the B05 (Golf rival) and B10 SUV.
The B03, measuring 4.2 meters in length, is slightly larger than the ID. Polo but smaller than the ID.3, which should translate to a more spacious interior than its direct competitors. The vehicle is expected to arrive in the UK by spring 2027.
Leapmotor’s B03 represents a strategic move to capture a larger share of the European EV market by offering a practical, tech-equipped, and competitively priced supermini. The focus on interior space and advanced safety features could make it an attractive option for budget-conscious buyers seeking a modern electric hatchback.
