Subaru Unveils the 2027 Getaway: A 420-HP Electric SUV Rivaling Toyota

13

Subaru has announced its fourth electric vehicle, the 2027 Getaway, a three-row SUV designed to compete directly with models like the Toyota Highlander EV. The Getaway promises over 300 miles of range, all-wheel drive standard, and up to 420 horsepower – making it a compelling new entry into the growing electric SUV market.

Performance and Range

The Getaway will launch in two variants: a long-range model arriving in late 2026, followed by a standard-range version in early 2027. The long-range trim boasts a 95.8-kilowatt-hour battery, allowing for over 300 miles of travel on a single charge. Subaru has equipped the vehicle with a 150-kilowatt fast-charging capability, enabling a 10-80% recharge in just 30 minutes. Crucially, the Getaway adopts the North American Charging Standard, granting seamless access to Tesla’s Supercharger network.

The standard-range model will feature a smaller 77.0-kWh battery. Despite the differences in battery size, both versions benefit from dual electric motors—one on each axle—delivering a combined output of 420 horsepower. Subaru claims a 0-60 mph time of under 5 seconds, with a towing capacity of 3,500 pounds and 8.3 inches of ground clearance.

Design and Interior

While developed in collaboration with Toyota, the Getaway distinguishes itself through Subaru-specific styling cues. These include an illuminated Subaru logo on the front and rear, signature headlights, and standard roof rails with 19- or 20-inch wheel options.

Inside, the Getaway shares a near-identical dashboard, steering wheel, and center console with the Highlander EV. However, Subaru enhances the cabin with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 14.0-inch infotainment display, wireless 15-watt charging, and native Android Auto/Apple CarPlay integration. Higher trims will offer heated and ventilated seats in all three rows, along with a heated steering wheel. The SUV accommodates up to seven passengers and features three-zone climate control with USB-C ports in every row.

Market Positioning and Pricing

The 2027 Subaru Getaway is expected to start in the mid- to upper-$40,000 range, positioning it above Subaru’s Trailseeker model. Given the close collaboration with Toyota, the Getaway’s success will hinge on whether its performance and brand appeal outweigh the design similarities.

The Getaway represents Subaru’s commitment to electrification, blending practicality with performance in a competitive segment.

The launch of the Getaway underscores a broader trend towards joint EV development among automakers seeking to share costs and accelerate innovation. It also highlights the growing importance of charging infrastructure compatibility, with Subaru’s adoption of the NACS standard ensuring accessibility for its customers.
