Mazda has confirmed that its smallest vehicle offerings—the Mazda2 and the CX-3 —are not going extinct just yet. While many enthusiasts feared these entry-level models were being phased out entirely, the automaker plans to develop next-generation versions of both vehicles to serve international markets.

A Strategic Delay in Development

Despite the commitment to refresh these models, patience will be required. In a recent interview with Drive, Vinesh Bhindi, Mazda’s head of operations in Australia, clarified that while new generations are in the works, they are not the company’s immediate priority.

Mazda is currently managing a strict “priority list” for its Research and Development (R&D) resources. Larger, more profitable projects—such as the upcoming CX-5 —are taking precedence. Because R&D budgets and engineering talent are finite, the company must sequence its releases carefully. Consequently, the next iterations of the Mazda2 and CX-3 are not expected to hit the market before 2027.

What to Expect from the Next Generation

While official specifications remain under wraps, industry observers are looking toward Mazda’s design concepts for a preview of what is to come.

  • Design Language: The new models will likely evolve the current Kodo design philosophy. There is strong speculation that they may draw inspiration from the X-Coupe concept, a compact five-door hatchback that showcased a more aggressive, modern aesthetic.
  • Interior Philosophy: Following the trend seen in recent concepts, the interior is expected to remain driver-centric. This could mean a focus on tactile controls and a sporty atmosphere, potentially moving away from the oversized, tablet-style infotainment screens that have become standard in many other brands.
  • Shared Platform: Given the relationship between the current models, the new Mazda2 and CX-3 will almost certainly continue to share a common platform to maximize manufacturing efficiency.

The Geographic Divide: Why the US is Being Left Out

There is a significant caveat to this news: these new models will likely never reach American showrooms.

The Mazda2 was discontinued in the United States over a decade ago, and the CX-3 has been absent for five years. This reflects a broader, long-standing trend in the automotive industry, particularly in North America. As consumer preferences have shifted heavily toward large crossovers and SUVs, the market for small, affordable hatchbacks has shrunk significantly in the US.

For Mazda, the decision to skip these models in America is a matter of economics. The cost of adapting small compacts to meet stringent US safety and emissions standards often outweighs the potential profit margins in a market that prioritizes larger vehicles.
