You can’t time an ignition system without data. Guessing leads to bent valves and wasted weekends. You need the baseline numbers before you touch a timing light.
Check aftermarket repair manuals, factory service guides, or reputable online databases. Emission stickers under the hood often hold the clue too. Specifically, you need to know the target RPM and the degrees before top dead center (BTDC) range. But the most critical piece of info is identifying cylinder No. 1.
Identifying the Key Cylinder
Most engines reference cylinder No. 1 for timing. If your manual is vague, use these general rules to find it.
Inline 4- and 6-cylinder engines. Cylinder No. 1 is usually the front-most cylinder. It’s the one closest to the accessory drive belts.
V-6 and V-8 engines. Look at the front-left bank. That’s typically cylinder No. 1.
Transverse engines. Common in front-wheel-drive cars, these often designate the far-right cylinder as No. 1.
Exceptions exist. Ford V-6 and V-8 engines use the far-right cylinder. Jaguar inline-6s built before 1988 time off cylinder No. 6. Do not skip this step. Wrong identification means you are timing the wrong piston.
Pre-Timing Checks
You have the cylinder location. You know the target RPM. Now verify the engine state. Conditions matter.

Operating temperature. The engine must be hot. Feel the radiator hose going from engine to radiator. It should be hot and pressurized. A cold engine gives false readings due to thermal expansion differences.

Vacuum advance. If your distributor uses vacuum advance, disconnect all hoses. Plug the port on the distributor itself. This removes vacuum influence and allows you to check mechanical timing only.

Computer-controlled timing. Some systems use a “set timing” connector or diagnostic terminal. The instructions will tell you to ground a specific pin or disconnect a control wire. Follow the service manual exactly. Bypassing these steps can cause the ECU to override your manual timing.
Why This Matters
Skipping the research phase is lazy. It leads to misfires and poor performance. Taking the time to find cylinder No. 1 ensures your timing mark aligns with the correct piston position.
Once the engine is hot and vacuum lines are plugged, you’re ready to aim the timing light. But first, confirm your baseline. One wrong number ruins the whole process.
Most people rush this. They shouldn’t. Precision saves engines.
