Carl Fisher proposed this dream in 1912. He wanted a continuous highway across the United States. The Lincoln Highway begins as a gravel road. It ended as concrete. This is a revolution. Since then we have added lanes. Asphalt can be installed faster. The mixture will become stiffer. But what happens to core technology? It barely moved.
Today, companies are building smart highways. Sensors detect traffic. They will reroute cars before you see traffic ahead. Your car interacts with the road. Safety isn’t a suggestion anymore. It’s a mandate.
The system recognizes your speed. Your momentum. your exact location. If conditions suddenly change, the highway takes over. Some freedom has been lost. You gain survival. There will be fewer collisions. Fewer gridlocks. This is a compromise we don’t want but desperately need.
You may reach a stage where you hand over the wheel completely. I doubt we’ll ever force everyone to give up control. Drivers love to drive. But I can’t wait to sit back. I want to tell the car where I’m going. I want it to handle the rest.
The transport economy is also changing. Self-healing materials reduce maintenance costs. Researchers are testing solar panels that can withstand heavy traffic. The highways of the future will be able to generate electricity themselves. solar road. Massive collectors. When connected to electric vehicles, the infrastructure can feeds itself. These panels don’t just sit there. LEDs embedded in the surface can display warnings. There are no more signs. No more overhead signs on your skyline. Just light on the asphalt. The heating elements can cause the ice to melt. The snow disappeared before it could accumulate. Travel becomes safer in winter.
Of course, there are also darker paths. You can stop investing. The road collapses. The lights went out. We’ve entered Mad Max territory. This is a valid fear. Deterioration of infrastructure is a reality.
