BYD has unveiled a significant upgrade to its Tang L SUV – marketed internationally as the Atto 8 or Sealion 8 – boasting performance figures rivaling premium electric vehicles and cutting-edge charging capabilities. The vehicle, now available in China from approximately $30,250, presents a compelling option in the rapidly evolving EV market.

Design and Interior Refinements

The updated Atto 8 maintains BYD’s signature “Dragon Face” aesthetic, with subtle but noticeable refinements to the front fascia. The most striking change is the redesigned D-pillar, which enhances visibility for rear passengers, and the addition of a roof-mounted lidar unit for improved autonomous driving functions. At the rear, the taillights feature designs inspired by Chinese motifs, including the “Phoenix Wing” and “Bamboo Craft” variations, adding a unique cultural touch.

The interior departs from typical minimalist EV designs, opting for a more ornate, palace-inspired aesthetic. Layered 3D-cut surfaces, bamboo wood trim, and sculpted dashboard elements create a sense of depth and luxury. The vehicle comes standard with BYD’s “God’s Eye B” DiPilot 300 driver-assistance system.

Powertrain Options: Hybrid and Electric Power

The Atto 8 offers both plug-in hybrid (DM) and fully electric (EV) variants. The hybrid model combines a 1.5T engine with BYD’s fifth-generation DM system, delivering a combined output of up to 200 kW per axle. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h takes around 4.3 seconds, with an electric-only range of 175–215 km.

The fully electric versions are the standout performers. The dual-motor configuration boasts a combined output of 230 kW at the front and 580 kW at the rear, enabling a 0–100 km/h sprint in just 3.9 seconds. These EVs utilize a 100.531 kWh blade battery, providing CLTC ranges of up to 670 km.

Ultra-Fast Charging and Autonomous Driving

The most notable feature is the vehicle’s support for 1,000 kW fast charging. BYD claims this can add approximately 370 km of range in just five minutes. This capability positions the Atto 8 at the forefront of EV charging technology, addressing a major consumer pain point.

Advanced driving features include “parking-spot to parking-spot” autonomous navigation, enabling the vehicle to handle parking maneuvers completely independently. The updated DiLink 150 infotainment system includes adaptive brightness, customizable seasonal themes, and interactive digital mascots.

The Atto 8’s launch highlights the accelerating pace of innovation in the Chinese EV market. With high performance, advanced charging, and bold design, it represents a competitive offering that could challenge established Western brands.
