New images of Volvo’s upcoming EX60 electric SUV have surfaced online days before its official debut, with an expected Australian release in mid-2026. The leak provides the first clear look at the vehicle, which is designed to compete directly with popular models like the Tesla Model Y, BMW iX3, and Mercedes GLC EQ.
Design and Key Features
The leaked images showcase Volvo’s signature “Thor’s Hammer” LED headlights – a design element first introduced in 2014 with the XC90 SUV. The EX60’s front bumper design is also visible, as highlighted in presentation subtitles reading “It’s written in black and white.”
Notably, Volvo’s former design chief, Thomas Ingenlath (previously CEO of Polestar), will return as Volvo’s chief designer on February 1, 2026. His return suggests a continuation of Volvo’s strong design identity.
Performance and Range
Volvo has already announced that the EX60 will offer a claimed range of 810km (WLTP cycle), making it the longest-range electric vehicle currently available. This surpasses the BMW iX3’s 805km range and is expected to overtake the Tesla Model 3 Long Range as the leader in range for Australian consumers.
The Model 3 Long Range currently holds the top spot with a 750km WLTP range, having previously outpaced the Polestar 3 Long Range Single Motor at 706km WLTP.
Technological Advancements
The EX60 is built on Volvo’s new SPA3 architecture, which promises faster processing speeds for infotainment, driver assistance, and autonomous features. This next-generation platform will underpin all future Volvo EVs.
Volvo Australia also plans to launch an updated EX90 large SUV in 2026, featuring an 800-volt electrical architecture to support faster charging capabilities. While the company initially pledged to sell only EVs in Australia by 2026, it has since revised that commitment.
The EX60’s upcoming release signals Volvo’s continued investment in electric vehicles, aiming to deliver competitive range, advanced technology, and recognizable design. The new model is poised to challenge Tesla and other established EV players in the rapidly growing electric SUV market.
