MG Motor has just launched the MG4 Urban, a new electric hatchback positioned as one of the most affordable EVs on the British market, starting at £23,495. This move dramatically undercuts competitors from Europe and Korea by roughly 20%, offering consumers exceptional value in the rapidly evolving electric vehicle sector.

A New Approach to Affordability
The MG4 Urban comes in three variants: the ‘Comfort Standard Range’ with a 43kWh battery (201-mile range), the £25,495 ‘Comfort Long Range’ (54kWh, 258-mile range), and the £27,495 ‘Premium Long Range’ – also with the 54kWh pack. This new model is distinct from the existing MG4 EV, being front-wheel drive instead of rear-wheel drive, and designed specifically for urban use.
To avoid overlap, the original MG4 will receive interior updates and will no longer include entry-level trims, positioning it above the Urban in MG’s lineup. Extended Range and XPower models will remain exclusive to the existing MG4.
Why This Matters: The Shift in EV Pricing
The MG4 Urban’s aggressive pricing reflects a broader trend in the EV market: manufacturers are under increasing pressure to deliver competitive prices as zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) targets become stricter. As MG’s head of product and planning, David Allison, explained, keeping costs down is “more and more challenging.”
The Urban’s design is also more streamlined, with softer styling and a slightly larger build (108mm longer) than the current MG4. This isn’t just aesthetic; it’s part of a broader push for efficiency and range.
Next-Generation Battery Technology
Perhaps the most significant aspect of the MG4 Urban is its potential compatibility with semi-solid-state batteries. These new batteries promise higher energy density, lighter weight, and improved safety compared to traditional liquid-cooled batteries. While initial models will use LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) batteries, MG’s parent company, SAIC, has confirmed the semi-solid-state battery has passed rigorous safety tests.
This technology is a game-changer because it could allow for smaller, lighter EV packs, faster charging, and greater range in future MG models. The Urban also features ‘battery to body’ integration, enhancing rigidity and crash protection.
Competition Heats Up
The MG4 Urban enters a crowded market, competing with rivals like the Kia EV3, Skoda Elroq, Cupra Born, and Vauxhall Astra Electric. However, its price point gives it a significant advantage.
The existing MG4 is also being updated with features from the MGS5 EV, including a larger 12.8-inch touchscreen and physical controls for key functions. This ensures the broader MG4 lineup remains competitive.
The MG4 Urban is a clear signal that the electric vehicle market is moving toward greater affordability, and that competition will only intensify in the coming years. This launch demonstrates MG’s commitment to delivering accessible EVs while pushing the boundaries of battery technology.
