Toyota Highlander EV: The Three-Row SUV Goes Electric

23

Toyota is fully embracing the electric future with the 2027 Highlander, a redesigned three-row SUV that abandons gasoline in favor of a fully electric powertrain. This transition marks a significant shift for the Highlander, a popular model since 2001, positioning it to compete directly with rivals like the Kia EV9 and Hyundai Ioniq 9.

Performance and Range

The 2027 Highlander EV offers a range of up to 320 miles on a single charge, depending on the configuration. All-wheel-drive models boast 338 horsepower, while front-wheel-drive options deliver 221 horsepower. Charging times are competitive: roughly 30 minutes to reach 80% capacity using a DC fast-charger. Toyota has also included vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality, allowing the SUV to power external devices or act as a backup energy source for homes.

Trims and Battery Options

The Highlander EV will be available in XLE and Limited trims. The XLE offers both front-wheel drive (with a 77-kWh battery for 287 miles of range) and all-wheel drive (with options for both 77-kWh and 96-kWh batteries, the latter providing up to 320 miles of range). The Limited comes standard with all-wheel drive and the larger 96-kWh battery.

Exterior Design and Dimensions

The new Highlander features a more angular and assertive design. It is wider and longer than its predecessor, with sharper lines and full-length daytime running lights. The vehicle’s dimensions have been updated to 2.3 inches wider, almost four inches longer, and an eight-inch-longer wheelbase, providing a bolder stance.

Interior Features and Technology

Inside, the Highlander EV boasts a modern cabin equipped with a 14.0-inch touchscreen, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, and wireless smartphone connectivity. Physical controls are retained for key functions like HVAC and stereo, offering user-friendly operation. Additional features include a standard dashcam, dual wireless chargers, USB-C ports, and ambient lighting with Safe Exit Assist.

Space and Comfort

The Highlander can accommodate up to seven passengers, depending on the second-row configuration. SofTex synthetic leather upholstery, heated front seats, and a heated steering wheel are standard. The Limited trim includes ventilated front seats and heated second-row seating. The third row folds flat, expanding cargo space to over 45 cubic feet. Toyota has also integrated 18 cupholders and numerous storage compartments throughout the cabin.

Safety and Driver Assistance

Toyota includes a comprehensive suite of driver-assistance features, including pre-collision detection, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure alert, blind-spot monitoring, and automatic high-beams. The Highlander is also equipped with a hands-free power liftgate.

Production and Pricing

The 2027 Highlander will be the first Toyota EV assembled in the U.S., at the company’s Georgetown, Kentucky plant. Batteries will be sourced from a new assembly plant in Liberty, North Carolina. Sales are expected to begin in late 2026, with a starting price around $55,000.

The Highlander’s shift to electric power is part of a broader industry trend toward electrification, driven by stricter emissions standards and growing consumer demand for sustainable vehicles. This move allows Toyota to stay competitive in the rapidly evolving SUV market.
