Audi has confirmed the S6 sedan will not return for the 2026 model year – and its future looks uncertain. This decision signals a shift in how Audi approaches performance, offering buyers alternatives rather than a dedicated high-performance trim.
The End of an Era?
For years, the S6 has been the go-to choice for drivers wanting a blend of luxury and speed in a traditional sedan format. The move to discontinue it isn’t a surprise, given Audi’s increasing focus on electric performance models and enhanced packages for its standard lineup.
Electric Alternatives and the Sport Plus Package
Audi isn’t leaving performance enthusiasts behind. The S6 e-tron – the all-electric version – boasts 543 horsepower and quicker acceleration than its gasoline predecessor (0-60 mph in just 3.4 seconds).
For those who prefer a gas engine, the 2026 A6 now offers a Sport Plus package for $5,850. This includes chassis upgrades, summer tires, a lowered suspension, and a torque-vectoring differential – features previously exclusive to the S6. Essentially, Audi is allowing customers to build their own performance sedan.
The Future of High-Performance Audis
The discontinuation of the S6 doesn’t mean the end of powerful Audis. Rumors suggest a replacement for the RS6 Avant (the high-performance wagon) is in development, likely as a plug-in hybrid to compete with rivals like the Mercedes-AMG E53 and BMW M5 Touring.
Audi’s strategy is clear: offer performance through electrification, enhanced trim packages, and continued development of its flagship RS models.
The S6’s departure marks a turning point. While some enthusiasts may miss the traditional high-performance sedan, Audi is providing viable alternatives – whether electric, customizable, or in wagon form.
