Mercedes-Benz ‘Little G’ Will Launch with Both Hybrid and EV Options

Mercedes-Benz is adjusting its strategy for the upcoming “Little G” off-roader, confirming that it will be available with both internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric vehicle (EV) powertrains when it arrives in 2027. Initially planned as an electric-only model, the shift reflects changing market demands and slower-than-expected EV adoption.

Market Context and Strategy Shift

The decision to offer a hybrid option comes as Mercedes reassesses its aggressive push toward full electrification. CEO Ola Källenius recently stated that the brand will continue selling ICE models “well into the 2030s,” prioritizing both strategic focus and tactical flexibility. This change mirrors similar moves by Porsche, which also abandoned its initial EV-only plans for the Macan and Cayenne.

The “Little G” is designed to compete with rugged crossovers like the upcoming Toyota Land Cruiser FJ and Ford Bronco, as well as Jaguar Land Rover’s “Defender Sport.” Mercedes aims to capture a broader audience by offering powertrain choice, acknowledging that global regulations and consumer preferences vary significantly.

Powertrain Details

The hybrid version will feature a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder petrol engine – currently used in the CLA – paired with a gearbox-mounted electric motor. This setup delivers up to 188 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque, with the electric motor enabling engine-off driving. The engine itself is produced through a joint venture between Geely and Renault in China.

The all-electric variant will utilize Mercedes’ ‘eATS2.0’ electric motors – one powering the front wheels and a more powerful unit driving the rear. An 85kWh NMC battery is expected to provide a WLTP range of approximately 450 miles.

Off-Road Capability

Both hybrid and EV versions will come standard with four-wheel drive, ensuring class-leading off-road performance. Sophisticated power management systems, including torque vectoring, will distribute drive to individual wheels for enhanced traction and stability, matching the capabilities of larger G-Class models. The “Little G” will sit on a unique, bespoke platform with many specialized parts.

By offering both hybrid and EV options, Mercedes-Benz is hedging its bets in a rapidly evolving automotive landscape, ensuring it remains competitive across diverse global markets.
