Porsche is developing a new mid-size SUV with both internal combustion engine (ICE) and hybrid options to complement its all-electric Macan, set to launch in the next few years. The company’s Australian CEO, Daniel Schmollinger, confirmed that the brand sees a “very good opportunity” in offering a combustion-powered Macan alongside the electric version.

Market Demand Drives Decision
This move comes as Porsche responds to continued demand for traditional powertrains. Despite a 27% drop in overall sales in Australia in 2024 (down to 5133 units), partially due to the Macan’s transition to EV-only, the company recognizes the need to cater to buyers who aren’t yet ready for full electrification. Macan sales specifically declined by 34% as the lineup shifted.
Porsche’s global CEO, Oliver Blume, previously stated that a compact SUV with ICE and hybrid versions is under development, with a launch anticipated no later than 2028. The vehicle will be “very, very typical Porsche” but differentiated from the Macan EV, though it may ultimately retain the “Macan” name.
Leveraging Audi Technology
The new Macan will likely be based on Audi’s Premium Platform Combustion (PPC), the latest evolution of Volkswagen Group’s mid-size SUV architecture. This would align it closely with the Audi Q5 and Q6 e-tron, allowing Porsche to share development costs and streamline production.
Potential Powertrain Options
The engine range could include 2.0-liter and 3.0-liter turbocharged petrol engines, potentially with 48V mild-hybrid assistance. Plug-in hybrid options, including a higher-output 2.0-liter and a possible high-performance variant based on Audi’s 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 PHEV, are also likely. Porsche has historically avoided diesel engines following emission scandals, so it will likely stick with petrol-only options.
Strategic Move in a Changing Market
Porsche’s decision to continue offering combustion engine options reflects the shifting dynamics of the automotive market. While EV adoption is growing, demand for traditional powertrains remains strong in certain regions. By hedging its bets with both electric and ICE models, Porsche aims to maximize sales and maintain its position in the luxury SUV segment.
The company expects the new Macan to be a key part of its future lineup, with Schmollinger promising “more [new models] to come.”
Porsche is adapting to changing market trends while ensuring it maintains a product for all customer preferences.
