A reckless road rage incident on Interstate 25 in Colorado last August culminated in a teen’s vehicle rolling into the median, according to recently released footage and police reports. The incident involved an off-duty police officer who has now been charged with misdemeanor offenses.
The Incident Unfolds
The crash occurred midday as Polly Voss, a registered nurse, drove northbound on I-25. Voss witnessed two vehicles—a white Audi Q5 and a Subaru Crosstrek—aggressively brake-checking each other in the express lane. The situation escalated rapidly when a passenger in the Audi leaned out the window, yelling at the Subaru driver.
Footage taken by Voss shows the Crosstrek, driven by 33-year-old off-duty Keenesburg Police Officer Jack Ross, swerving across double lines into the middle lane. A Jeep Liberty already in that lane attempted to avoid Ross, overcorrected, and rolled into the median. Remarkably, the teen driver walked away from the wreck with no serious injuries, Voss stated, describing it as “miraculous”.
Officer’s Actions Under Scrutiny
The Colorado State Patrol identified Ross through cellphone footage. Troopers determined Ross was actively tailgating another driver and “road raging” prior to the crash. He left the scene without reporting the incident. When questioned, Ross claimed he was unaware a crash had occurred.
However, investigators report that Ross’s wife witnessed the incident and expressed concern for the other driver, prompting Ross to allegedly reply, “It wasn’t their fault.”
Legal Consequences and Job Security
Ross faces misdemeanor charges of reckless driving and failure to report an accident. If convicted, he could face up to 90 days in jail and a $300 fine, along with potential license points or suspension. The long-term impact on his employment with the Keenesburg Police Department remains uncertain.
This case highlights the dangers of aggressive driving behavior and underscores that even those sworn to uphold the law are not immune to road rage.
The incident serves as a stark reminder that escalating tensions on the road can have severe consequences for all involved.
