Jaguar Land Rover is reviving the Freelander nameplate, but with a significant departure from its Land Rover origins. The reborn Freelander will launch as a distinct sub-brand in China, developed in partnership with Chery, and will feature a bold, boxy design reminiscent of the original model. Leaked crash-test images and subsequent renderings provide an early look at the upcoming SUV, revealing a striking departure from JLR’s current lineup.

Design Echoes of the Past

Initial sightings of the new Freelander were limited to heavily camouflaged prototypes. However, recent teaser images and crash-test photos have unveiled its shape, prompting renderings from Sugar Design that capture the essence of the vehicle. The design team appears to have deliberately drawn inspiration from the classic Freelander, blending retro aesthetics with modern elements.

The front fascia features squared headlights framed by LED daytime running lights, with a prominent “Freelander” script spanning between them. A blacked-out bumper completes the rugged look, though the absence of a traditional upper grille is a notable design choice.

Bold Styling and Platform Details

The sides of the new Freelander showcase an angled C-pillar and black wheel arches, maintaining the high stance of its predecessor. The rear design includes minimalist taillights and large “Freelander” badging on the tailgate.

JLR intends to relaunch Freelander as a standalone brand in China, offering both fully electric and hybrid versions. Hybrid models will utilize Chery’s T1X platform, which already underpins several vehicles from Jaecoo, Omoda, and Chery globally.

The Freelander’s revival marks a strategic shift for JLR, leveraging partnerships to expand its presence in key markets while retaining a nod to its heritage. The design choices suggest a deliberate attempt to capture the original Freelander’s spirit in a modern package.
