GAC Aion to Launch Battery-Swap Version of RT Sedan with 99-Second Swap Capability

GAC Group is set to expand its electric vehicle lineup with the official launch of the Aion RT battery-swap version on April 8. This new variant aims to bridge the gap between traditional plug-in charging and high-speed energy replenishment, offering a “quick swap” feature that can replace a battery in just 99 seconds.

Breaking the Charging Bottleneck

The introduction of battery-swapping technology is a strategic move to address one of the primary hurdles of EV adoption: range anxiety and long charging times. While conventional charging remains an option, the ability to swap a depleted battery for a fully charged one in under two minutes mimics the speed of a traditional petrol refuel.

This move places GAC in direct competition with other manufacturers investing in swapping infrastructure, signaling a trend toward “hybrid” energy models where users can choose between the convenience of home charging and the speed of automated swapping stations.

Design and Dimensions

The Aion RT is a compact sedan designed with aerodynamic efficiency in mind. Its aesthetic combines modern styling with functional engineering:
Exterior: A closed front grille, rounded headlight clusters, and a coupe-style fastback silhouette.
Aerodynamics: Gloss-black L-shaped air ducts and a trapezoidal intake are integrated to minimize wind resistance.
Size: The vehicle measures 4,865mm in length and 1,875mm in width, with a wheelbase of 2,775mm, providing a stable footprint for a compact sedan.

Interior Technology and Intelligence

Inside the cabin, the Aion RT focuses on a digital-first user experience. The cockpit is centered around a 14.6-inch floating touchscreen and an 8.88-inch digital instrument cluster.

The vehicle runs on the ADiGO 5.0 infotainment system, which utilizes a tablet-style interface to support various applications. For drivers prioritizing autonomous capabilities, high-end variants will feature:
* A 126-line LiDAR sensor for enhanced spatial awareness.
* The Nvidia Orin-X chip, providing 254 TOPS of computing power to manage intelligent driving assistance.

Performance and Battery Specifications

The current Aion RT lineup is powered by permanent magnet synchronous motors, offering power outputs of either 204 hp or 224 hp.

The vehicle utilizes CATL-supplied Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) 2.0 “magazine-style” battery packs. Depending on the chosen configuration, drivers can expect:
1. 55.1 kWh battery: Providing a CLTC range of approximately 520 km.
2. 68.1 kWh battery: Providing a CLTC range of approximately 650 km.

The upcoming April 8 launch will integrate these high-capacity LFP packs with the new rapid-swap hardware, potentially offering a more flexible energy solution than the current models, which are priced between 99,800 and 123,800 yuan ($14,500–$17,900).

The Aion RT’s new battery-swap capability represents a significant step in making electric vehicles more practical for long-distance travel by drastically reducing downtime.
