Bentley Tests Demand for a Rugged Bentayga X

Bentley is exploring whether its wealthy clientele crave a truly off-road capable version of the Bentayga SUV, introducing the Bentayga X Concept as a way to gauge interest. This isn’t just about adding cosmetic upgrades: the concept features substantial mechanical changes, suggesting Bentley could be serious about building a rugged luxury vehicle.

Beyond Pavement: What the Bentayga X Offers

The concept is designed to move the Bentayga into more challenging terrain. Ride height has been increased by 55 mm (2.2 inches), while the track width expands by 120 mm (4.7 inches) for improved stability. The suspension has been modified to increase travel, and the vehicle can now wade through water up to 500 mm (19.7 inches) deep.

The exterior changes aren’t subtle. Beefy off-road tires wrap around 22-inch forged wheels, and the wheel arches are flared to accommodate the wider stance. Roof-mounted spotlights and storage solutions prepare the vehicle for extended expeditions, while an integrated electric go-kart adds a playful, adventurous touch.

Performance Remains Untamed

Despite the off-road focus, the Bentayga X retains the high-performance credentials of the Bentayga Speed. The 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine still delivers 641 hp (650 PS), ensuring that even off-road excursions come with a powerful soundtrack. The air suspension and active anti-roll system help maintain composure over rough terrain.

A Calculated Test of Market Demand

Bentley is openly admitting the concept is a market test. The company intends to gather feedback on whether buyers want a genuinely capable off-roader, or whether the current trend toward rugged SUVs can be monetized at the luxury end. Given the popularity of overlanding and adventure vehicles, a production version seems likely.

“This concept has been developed to stimulate and gain feedback for an enhanced off-road capable Bentayga,” Bentley stated, hinting that a production model may already be in development.

The Bentayga X debuted at the FAT Ice Race festival in Austria, alongside other high-performance Bentley models, further emphasizing its adventurous spirit. If customer response is positive, Bentley could soon offer a luxury SUV that’s as comfortable on the trails as it is on the highway.
