BYD’s premium sub-brand, Denza, is set to enter the UK market with a high-performance statement: the Denza Z. This four-seat Grand Tourer (GT) is designed to compete directly with established European heavyweights, including the Porsche 911 and the Maserati GranTurismo.
Unveiled at the 2026 Beijing Auto Show, the Denza Z represents a strategic shift for BYD, moving from mass-market electric vehicles into the high-end, high-performance luxury segment.

Design with a European Pedigree
The Denza Z departs from typical electric vehicle aesthetics, opting instead for a classic GT silhouette characterized by a long bonnet and elegant, clean surfacing. This “European flavor” is no accident; the design is overseen by Wolfgang Egger, a renowned designer whose portfolio includes iconic models from Alfa Romeo, Audi, and Lamborghini.
The lineup is expected to offer three distinct configurations:
– A traditional hard-top coupé
– A convertible variant
– A high-performance ‘track’ version, likely featuring aggressive aerodynamic elements such as a large rear wing.
Performance and Engineering
While the Denza Z mimics the proportions of traditional front-engined petrol supercars, it is entirely electric. Built on the advanced e3 platform, the vehicle promises extreme performance metrics:
– Power Output: Over 1,000bhp.
– Acceleration: A projected 0-62mph time of under two seconds.
– Chassis Technology: It features the DiSus-M intelligent magnetorheological body-control system. Similar to technology used in the Chevrolet Corvette, this system manages body movement during high-speed cornering to ensure stability.
The car is also expected to inherit advanced driving capabilities from its sibling, the Yangwang U9, including drifting modes, autonomous driving assistance, and ‘tank turns’ (the ability to rotate the car in place).
Addressing the Charging Hurdle
One of the primary concerns for high-performance EVs is charging speed and infrastructure. To combat “range anxiety” and long wait times, the Denza Z will utilize BYD’s ‘Flash Charging’ technology.
This system is capable of delivering up to 1,500kW of power. For context, similar technology has demonstrated the ability to charge a large battery from 10% to 97% in just nine minutes. To support this rollout in the UK, BYD plans to have approximately 200 ultra-fast flash chargers operational by the end of this year.
Why This Matters
The arrival of the Denza Z signals a significant evolution in the automotive landscape. Chinese manufacturers are no longer just competing on price and battery scale; they are now aggressively targeting the prestige and performance sectors traditionally dominated by European marques. By employing veteran European designers and investing in cutting-edge chassis and charging tech, BYD is attempting to bridge the gap between “tech-heavy” EVs and “emotion-driven” supercars.
The Denza Z represents BYD’s attempt to prove that electric performance can match the soul and prestige of traditional European grand tourers.
The Denza Z is expected to make its official European debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed this July.
