It also means that if one wheel loses traction, the other gets nothing. The spinning wheel eats all the torque. The stuck wheel sits there. Zero.

Locking Differentials: The Nuclear Option
A locking differential is simple. It physically locks the axle shafts together. The left and right wheels rotate at the exact same speed.
